DIY Lock Change: Tools and Time
Updated October 11, 2026
What a lock change actually needs
Screwdrivers (Phillips #2 plus a short stubby for tight backsets), calipers or a tape, the installation template from the box, and painter’s tape to protect the finish. A drill only if you are boring fresh holes — replacements reuse the prep.
Time by job
- Like-for-like deadbolt swap: 15-30 minutes per lock.
- Knob or lever swap: 10-20 minutes.
- First smart lock: add 30 minutes for app, firmware, and codes.
- Fresh bore in a blank slab: 45-90 minutes with a hole-saw kit and jig.
Estimate the visit with the time estimator, price parts and labor against a pro with the cost estimator, and confirm prep with the fit checker before the return window closes.
Stop and call a pro when
Mortise bodies, misalignment that needs chiseling, doors that have already split, and anything involving the strike on a steel frame. The service call is cheaper than the second door.
