Parts: match models to retail

A fair parts line sits inside the tier band for the lock count: about $30-60 per budget lock, $70-130 mid-range, $150-300 premium mechanical, $180-350 smart. Above the band, ask for exact model numbers and compare them to shelf prices — a common gap is a mid-range quote carrying premium model numbers, or the reverse. Below the band, ask what is actually quoted: builder-grade hardware at premium labor rates is the classic trap.

Labor: scheduled versus emergency are different sports

Scheduled lock work typically lands $120-220 for the visit; emergency and after-hours runs $250-450. A scheduled quote above the band should name the trigger: stairs, parking, haul-away, or a second trip. Ask for fixed per-lock pricing so the third lock does not cost as much as the first.

Trip fee: small line, big signal

Trip or service-call fees up to about $85 are normal; many shops waive them when the job is accepted. A trip fee above that, or a trip fee stacked on top of high labor, is the easiest line to negotiate down — ask for it to be credited against the work.

Verify before you sign

  • Get model numbers for every lock on the quote
  • Confirm scheduled versus emergency rate in writing
  • Ask whether haul-away and a 10-cycle function test are included
  • Two comparable quotes beat one clever negotiation
