Smart Locks for Renters
Updated October 11, 2026
What leases usually allow
Most leases forbid changing the exterior cylinder or lock body but say nothing about the interior thumbturn. That makes retrofit kits (August Wi-Fi, Yale Approach) the renter-safe path: no exterior change, original keys keep working, uninstall in minutes at move-out.
The renter checklist
- Read the lease for lock-change clauses before buying anything.
- Keep every original part in a labeled bag — screws, tailpiece, thumbturn.
- Photograph everything before and after; deposit disputes love lock photos.
- Give the landlord access — a code or a key, per local law. A lock the landlord cannot open is an eviction-grade mistake.
- Confirm door prep with the fit checker; rental slabs are often thin or oddly bored.
When to walk away
Mortise locks, interconnected locks, and doors without deadbolts defeat retrofit kits. Do not force it — a smart lever or landlord permission for a full swap are the only clean options.
