Smart Lock Compatibility Checker

Screen whether a retrofit smart lock may fit your existing residential door.

Inputs

Door and lock details

Retrofit kits usually cover 1-3/8 to 2 in.

Measure to nearest trim or obstruction.

Result

Fit score (4 = full fit)
—
Clearance fit (1 = yes)
—
Door fit (1 = yes)

Lock type fit (1 = yes)

Thickness fit (1 = yes)

A screening result is not a guarantee for a specific smart-lock brand or model.

Will a Retrofit Smart Lock Fit?

The four fit checks

  1. Lock type. Single-cylinder deadbolts retrofit cleanly. Multi-point, mortise, and double-cylinder doors usually need brand-specific models.
  2. Door material. Narrow-stile glass and metal doors reject most retrofit kits.
  3. Thickness. Kits typically cover 1-3/8 to 2 in.
  4. Interior clearance. Keep 2-1/2 in to the nearest trim or the interior escutcheon will not seat.

Double-cylinder conversions must preserve code-compliant egress. When the score is below 4/4, get a model-specific survey, not a generic smart lock.

Smart-Lock Power, Signal, and Battery Life

Signal decides the protocol

Estimate 2.4 GHz RSSI from router distance plus 9 dB per wall. Above -65 dBm suits direct Wi-Fi; -65 to -75 is marginal; below -75, use a hub or move the access point. More than 6 Wi-Fi locks per access point needs a dedicated SSID.

Battery math

Wi-Fi drains fastest, Z-Wave/Thread slowest. Freezing weather cuts alkaline capacity first; lithium holds up. Treat the low end of the interval as the shopping trigger and keep one spare set per lock.

Verify before you buy

  • Photograph hinges and interior clearance
  • Confirm handing for keypad models
  • Check fire egress for double-cylinder doors
