Read the model from the hardware

Brand and model sit on the lock face, the latch plate edge, or the original box. Big-box store brands print it inside the battery cover or on the receipt — photograph it before the box goes missing. Fifty mainstream US residential models are in the catalog: Schlage, Kwikset, Yale, Defiant, Baldwin, August, and common retrofit kits.

Trust the tape over the catalog

Catalog specs describe the model line; the door decides. A deadbolt on a thick slab still needs a thick-door kit, and a painted-over bore still measures wrong. Enter measured thickness and backset alongside the model — the verdict checks both before recommending a path.

Retrofit or full replacement

Retrofit kits (August Wi-Fi, Yale Approach, Kwikset Convert) keep the existing deadbolt and keyway: cheapest when prep is standard. Full replacement (Encode Plus, Assure 2, Halo) resets keyway and grade: right when hardware is worn, mixed-brand, or due for an upgrade.

Verify before you buy

  • Read brand and model from the hardware or box
  • Confirm thickness and backset with calipers and tape
  • Match retrofit kits to the deadbolt, not knobs or levers
