How to Read a Lock Spec Sheet
Updated October 11, 2026
Read the sheet, not the box
The box sells finish and feel. The spec sheet sells dimensions. Before any lock purchase, find the installation template or spec PDF and confirm four numbers: backset options, door-thickness range, face-bore diameter, and latch faceplate type.
Where manufacturers hide it
- Schlage / Kwikset / Yale — support or product pages carry installation PDFs; template included in the box.
- Big-box brands — specs live on the retailer listing; screenshot them, listings change.
- No sheet at all — treat as ungraded hardware and budget accordingly. See grades explained.
Cross-check against the catalog
Manufacturers can also submit verified specs directly through the manufacturer portal. Either way, confirm with the model lookup and the fit checker before money moves.
