How Many Keys Should You Cut?
Updated October 11, 2026
The formula: people plus spares plus one
Count every regular user, add one spare per lock group for lockouts, and add one sealed master spare stored off-site. A couple in a one-key house cuts four: two carried, one with a neighbor, one sealed at the office.
What raises the count
- Kids and cleaners — restricted spares beat hiding a key under the mat.
- Keyed-different groups — each group multiplies the count. Simplify first with keyed-alike.
- Rentals — tenant plus manager plus turnover spare per unit.
Price it before the counter
Standard keys cut for a few dollars; restricted and high-security blanks cost more and only through authorized shops. Run the duplication planner with your headcount, then read the move-in checklist if this is a new home.
