Keyed Alike Explained
Updated October 11, 2026
One key, many locks
Keyed-alike means several cylinders accept the same key. Keyed-different means each has its own. Most homes want alike for entries (one key at the door) and different — or keyed-alike on a second key — for garage, office, and rentals.
The constraints
- Same keyway required — SC1 and KW1 cannot share. See keyways explained.
- Same manufacturer family helps — cross-brand alike is possible but limits who can cut keys later.
- SmartKey locks (Kwikset) can be keyed alike at home in seconds — see the SmartKey guide.
Plan the groups first
Split locks into who-opens-what groups before buying anything: household entries, private rooms, shared access. The keyed-alike planner turns the groups into a shopping list and flags cylinders that must be replaced rather than repinned.
