Smart Lock Outage and Offline Plan
Updated October 11, 2026
Two separate failures, two plans
Dead batteries
Every smart lock keeps a mechanical key override — except key-free models (Obsidian, Assure 2 Touch key-free, Yale Code). If yours is key-free, the plan is prevention: 9V backup terminals on many models, scheduled changes from the battery estimator, and a spare set staged outside the locked door.
Dead internet
Codes, fingerprint, and Bluetooth keep working without internet — remote access and notifications do not. Know which features of your lock are local before the outage: Zigbee/Z-Wave locks on a hub with battery backup keep automations; Wi-Fi locks lose remote control entirely.
The minimum kit
- One mechanical key per adult, stored off-site (car, office, trusted neighbor).
- Spare batteries where you can reach them locked out.
- Written code list — not in the phone that is also locked inside.
- Landlord or host contact for managed properties.
