Door Handing: LH, RH, LHR, RHR
Updated October 11, 2026
The 10-second test
Stand outside the door facing it. If the hinges are on your left, it is a left-hand door; on your right, right-hand. Then note the swing: does it open toward you (inswing) or away (outswing)? The four combinations are LH, RH, LHR, RHR — the R suffix marks reverse-bevel outswing doors.
When handing actually matters
- Levers and handlesets — many are handed; order the wrong side and the lever points at the ceiling.
- Deadbolts and knobs — almost always universal. Do not pay extra for a “handed” deadbolt.
- Outswing entries — common in Florida and coastal zones; hinges need non-removable pins regardless of handing.
Record it before shopping
Use the handing checker to log hinge side and swing, then read the verdict when buying levers or handlesets. Pair with the prep readings so the whole door is documented in one pass.
